Spain – Players to Watch

It is not outside the realms of possibility that Pedri is named Euro 2020’s Young Player of the Tournament. Those who would have watched him play for the first time without any insight into his background would never have guessed that he was just 18.

The midfielder fit seamlessly in a midfield consisting of stalwarts Sergio Busquets and Koke and kept out the likes of Fabian Ruiz and Thiago.

The important thing is, he looked like he belonged out there. There was never a moment when Pedri felt out of his depth or forced to take a step too big too soon.

Pedri is the future, of Spain, of Barcelona, perhaps, of football. Keeping him fit, managing his game load, and the expectations attached to him will benefit all those hoping to win in the present.

Like Pedri, Ansu Fati is a player thought of highly. There aren’t many dissimilarities between the two; Fati, like Pedri, is still 18 and plays for FC Barcelona.

The forward would’ve made the Euro 2020 squad had it not been for an injury-hit season, which restricted him to the sidelines for much of the campaign.

Fati, however, has already made his debut for La Roja and scored his first goal. He is not a striker by trade, but he could be the answer to Spain’s long-term search for a consistent goal threat.

Spain – Hopes for the Future

This Spain team doesn’t yet feel like a finished product, but it’s close. Close enough that expectations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar can – and should – be raised.

Before that, however, Spain has a chance to win an international trophy, albeit one that is not as valuable as either the Euro or the World Cup.

Enrique’s team will take on their vanquishers, Italy, in the 2021 UEFA Nations League semi-final. A win will set up a final against either Belgium or France.

Another will provide the Spaniards with a much-needed boost and their first trophy since 2012.
