Owen Wijndal – 21, Netherlands Group C

Wijndal is an active left-back coming from AZ Alkmaar and his inclusion in the Netherlands squad and possibly being in the starting eleven come Sunday is a testament to his skill and the trust he holds in the Dutch camp.

Originally, he was intending to join his U21 teammates at their European Championship tournament when the call-up from Frank de Boer came.

Alongside Cody Gakpo and Teun Koopmeiners who were called up in the middle of the tournament, they hold the talent to feature for the nation and hopefully help them make a deep run.

He could hopefully use this tournament to leapfrog himself into a top 5 league club as he surely holds a lot of interest around Europe thus far.

His addition to the team alongside the other youngsters like Gravenberch will steer them out of the stale 4-3-3 in which they have been operating in since their run in the 2014 World Cup.

A lot of fans, like myself, have been longing for the integration of a 5-3-2 formation somehow which places de Vrij, de Ligt and Blind as the 3 CB’s (VVD when healthy) and gives the young left-back ample room to place his exceptional ability to get forward and supply dangerous crosses and chances into the box.
