Champions League Final loss shows Kane should be City’s top target

In the days since the 2021 Champions League final, much has been made of Manchester City’s woeful loss – a game which they entered as favourites and finished as deserved losers.

Pundits and fans were (rightly) quick to point out Pep Guardiola’s questionable game plan, whilst praising the tactical nous of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea as contributing factors.

A simplistic view of what happened would argue that Guardiola merely overthought his tactics on the day and that after Kevin de Bruyne’s injury, City never stood a chance.

But a deeper look at City’s personnel suggests that the result may not have differed, regardless of formation.
