Left-back

João Cancelo -Manchester City – Average Match Rating: 7.40

You may have thought that the top-rated Manchester City defender was Ruben Dias, but it isn’t, in fact, it is his fellow countryman, Joao Cancelo, who had a match rating of 7.40. The 26-year-old Portuguese left-back has two goals and three assist this season.

Cancelo plays a large role on both offense and defense for the 2021 EPL champions. The Cityzens finished with the most clean sheets this season with 19.

Right-Back

Aaron Wan-Bissaka -Manchester United- Average Match Rating: 7.24

On the other side of the defense is Aaron Wan Bissaka. The Manchester United right-back has great positioning. He leads the league in blocks with 113. To put that achievement in a better perspective, the player in second has 80.

Wan Bissaka nearly doubled his attacking numbers from last season. He has scored two goals and had four assists during his 34 games.

Center-Back

Wesley Fofana -Leicester City- Average Match Rating: 7.08

Wesley Fofana’s stats do not necessarily show up on the basic stat sheet. However, his positioning and awareness are top-tier.

Leicester City was top five in the league for the fewest shots allowed. Throughout their 38 games, they have allowed just over 130 shots on target. That is over 20 fewer shots than the league average.

Center-Back

Harry Maguire -Manchester United Average Match Rating: 7.05

To finish out our back-four, we have Harry Maguire as our second center back. The 28-year-old Englishman played in 30 games this season and had an average match rating of 7.05.

Maguire is the bruiser for United. He leads the league with 11 yellow cards and is in the top five for interceptions with 61. Maguire also had benefits on the offensive side of the ball prior to suffering his ankle injury. He scored two goals and had one assist for the Red Devils this season.
