Arsenal: Is Willian the worst free signing in the Premier League’s history?
Ranking Willian and his free transfer to Arsenal. He was once said to be smart business. Now? Not even close to the thought of it!
It must be taken into account that Arsenal got the winger on a free at the start of the season. Added to this, we must acknowledge that he is one of the best-paid outfielders at the Emirates club.
Then, we take his ambition to take the Gunners to the Champions League and his poor tally in front of goal into the conversation.
Comparing him to the other surprisingly bad business over the years where there were actual transfer fees involved, he definitely ranks in the top three or top five of worst transfers by an English club.
He should be doing a lot more as he left Stamford Bridge to prove he has what it takes to play week in and week out – claiming to be unprepared to sit on the bench and play second fiddle to the new signings.
He literally has been handed a chance to prove his worth plenty of times and has actually become the player who Mikel Arteta gets the most heat from fans for playing.
He is undoubtedly the worst signing of this season in my books but not the worst in the history of the English top-flight.
The crazy thing about this all… He was once considered as some of the best business the Premier League has ever seen Arsenal do – that was after his stellar opening day performance against Fulham.
