Manchester City: Are we witnessing the best centre-back duo in the world?

It is clear that in the Pep Guardiola era, he has spent too much money on defenders as it wasn’t working for Manchester City.

The Spaniard has spent over 400 million euros on defenders. Angelino, Danilo, Ake, Mendy, Cancelo, Laporte, Stones, Ruben Dias, and Kyle Walker have been the defenders signed by Guardiola during his time at the Manchester club.

This season the Citizens bought Ruben Dias for €65 million and the Portuguese has been an excellent player who has reinforced Manchester City’s defensive line for the good.

Guardiola, finally after five years at the Etihad, has found his best center-back duo, Ruben Dias and John Stones. The latter is having an outstanding season but was very criticized since he did not perform as expected seasons prior to this.

Stones came to City in 2016 from Everton being called the future of England in the center-back position. Unfortunately, he had many injuries which were factors for his poor performances.

This season he has leveled up and is finally showing the world why he was signed for the Citizens in the first place.

Even Aymeric Laporte, who is an excellent CB has performed well since he was signed, does not get many minutes on the field because Ruben Dias and John Stones are just at an incredible level.
