Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the very best players in football for a few years now. He’s been absolutely vital for Manchester City, even more so this season with Pep Guardiola sometimes implementing a game plan that doesn’t involve a striker. He’s always been amazing no matter where he plays or what role he’s asked to play.

But, now, towards the business end of the season, Kevin De Bruyne has been hit with an injury that could change the fate of Manchester City’s season.

Playing against Chelsea, De Bruyne had contact with N’golo Kante towards the touchline and something happened to his foot, which ultimately forced him out of the game. At first glance, it didn’t look very good. Shortly after, tests were done on the injury.

What update has been provided by Manchester City regarding the injury?

City have now come through with an injury update, of sorts, saying that De Bruyne had an injury to the foot and the ankle, and is surely out for the game against Aston Villa. But, the extent of the injury is not known.

This could mean a lot of things for the club. Manchester City are top of the Premier League table, eight points ahead of second-placed Manchester United. I don’t think securing the league title would be an issue since City’s depth is just unreal. But it would make things a little difficult for them in the Carabao Cup final and especially the Champions League games against PSG.

More from Manchester City

PSG has defeated two counter-pressing possession-based teams in the Champions League, with not a lot of difficulty. They beat FC Barcelona in the Round-of-16 and they also beat Bayern Munich in two incredibly entertaining games in the quarter-finals. All of these games consisted of oppositions that generally play a high line.

Against Bayern, PSG sat back and hit the opponents on the break when they turned the ball over. The first part of that sentence is exactly why Kevin De Bruyne is needed. His directness, his ability to split defenses at will and making something out of nothing is very very important against PSG. Even though they have other players that could probably do that too, none of them is at Kevin De Bruyne’s level, in my opinion.

The Belgian, who just signed a contract renewal with City, is easily one of the very best midfielders in the world and they would miss his presence a lot if he doesn’t play. That actually looks very likely, unfortunately, because De Bruyne didn’t look comfortable at all when he was going off. Moreover, Manchester City haven’t really given a proper update on his injury. More updates are to follow, so it is definitely serious.
