It has been a fantastic week for Manchester City and their supporters. A Champions League first-leg victory over Dortmund and a contract extension by playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.

Kevin De Bruyne has laid to bed any debate of a Manchester exit following his and the club’s announcement of signing a new long-term deal. His new contract keeps him at the Etihad for the next four years, until 2025.

That’s an extra two years added on to his old deal and now finally lets us know he will be retiring at the club he has seen his most success as a footballer – winning multiple major honours for his club and almost a countless amount of individual awards.

Why was it important for de Bruyne to commit his long-term future to Manchester City?

The Belgian world-beater had two years left on his contract and is arguably one of the best playmakers in the game today, worldwide.

If he had reached the final year of his old contract, some of Europe’s giants would have undoubtedly come knocking – and the asking price for him would have had to be reduced to a total possibly lower than his then club record fee reported to be £55million (€75 million), which they paid back in 2015.

Now, especially in this confined transfer market, they have inflated his valuation and made it almost impossible for others to try and sign him.

He is 29 years of age (turning 30 in June) and will be 34 years old by the end of his new deal. He has many playing days ahead of him and if Pep Guardiola stays onboard, there will assuredly be trophies and lots of success to come.

The most important factor of the renewal is the Manchester club deservingly making him the highest-paid player at the Etihad and the whole of the English Premier League.

"Kevin De Bruyne has become the best-paid player in the Premier League after signing a new four-year contract worth £20 million a season.De Bruyne represented himself during the six-month negotiation period, which ended yesterday when he agreed to extend his contract by two years until the summer of 2025.De Bruyne, 29, will earn about £385,000 a week, which eclipses the £375,000-a-week contract that David De Gea signed with Manchester United in 2019. De Bruyne’s previous contract, which was due to expire in 2023, was worth roughly £300,000 a week. (Via: The Times)"

Kevin de Bruyne best-paid outfielder in the Premier League

As per The Times, he will earn £385k a week which totals £20m a year. Is this justifiable? Unquestionably it is! He has for consecutive seasons in the past, including this one, been in the top three or top five players in the Premier League.

He along with Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Vincent Kompany have been worth every penny spent on them  – bringing the Cityzens their most success in English history.

It is actually about time they award last season’s PFA Player of the Year with a contract hard to turn down. Kevin is Manchester City’s first male player to receive the award in the history of the accolade just to make it even more convincing.

It is only fitting they bumped up his salary up to a ridiculous number and now can prep a spot at the Etihad somewhere to start building his statue – preferably next to those Man City legends named earlier in the post.
