Off to a flying start in the Champions League. No team wanted to settle on level terms leaving only winners and losers in the first lot of round of 16 encounters.

Four matches played, four winners, four loses but nothing decided until the final whistle of the final leg goes off – which takes place in the first week of March.

Between the four fixtures played from Tuesday to Wednesday, we saw 15 goals scored with only one team keeping a clean sheet – that team, the most unlikely of the 16 Champions League competitors you’d predict to win with a clean sheet.

There were some really poor performances from the usual best, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. They had to make way for others who stole the show, most notably, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.

Here are the top takeaways and performances in the Champions League round of 16 so far

Most entertaining matchups

More from Champions League

Barcelona 1-4 PSG

Mbappe stole the show with a hat-trick while Messi watched on in horror and disappointment. They were the only team to beat their opponents by three goals.

Barca’s penalty was the first goal of the game which gave us all the impression they were going to make it difficult for PSG. However, it was the complete opposite.

Sevilla 2-3 Borussia Dortmund

There was almost nothing to separate the pair, but the big difference between them, Erling Haaland and a monstrous strike of Mahmoud Dahoud.

Thankfully, the ruthless and always on target Haaland helped his side take a good advantage back to Signal Iduna Park.

Most shocking result

FC Porto 2-1 Juventus

Firstly, Porto’s lucky not to concede a late penalty in the final minutes of the game. Ronaldo, who ghosted the majority of the match, should have been awarded a penalty when he was taken down.

The score could have gone in Juve’s favour heading back to Allianz Stadium but with some fortune, they pulled off the most surprising win of the round so far.

The only clean sheet came from Liverpool

This could be labelled as one of the most shocking results but Liverpool is the European powerhouse from England and their victory over RB Leipzig proved it.

They were the only team to collect a clean sheet and now become the team with the most clean sheets in the competition since returning in 2017.

They now have 18 clean sheets. They came into the match second best and with the worst defence compared to Leipzig.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men came into the game conceding only four goals in their last six outings across all competitions. Liverpool went into their UCL clash conceding 13 in their last six games.

All to play for and more to come from the best club competition in Europe.
