The hope of a mega January deal for any of the Premier League clubs appear to be fading with each day that passes. The chances of Manchester City signing one of the world’s most influential stars seem unlikely to happen this month.

One of the biggest sagas carrying over from last year’s summer transfer window is that of Lionel Messi and him reaching the final six months of his contract as of Jan the 1st. The possibility of him signing another extension with Barca is quite far-fetched at the moment.

This put the world’s richest and biggest clubs on alert – monitoring the situation and waiting for January to come so they could pounce on bringing in the six-time Ballon d’Or footballer to their respective club. One such club was said to be the oil-rich Manchester City.

A reunion of Pep Guardiola and Messi was the most sensible of all moves – that plus Paris Saint-Germain and City are the only two clubs able to meet his salary expectations.

He currently earns £500,000-per-week at Barcelona. Clubs would have to match that or offer something very close to that humungous figure to prize the Argentine forward.

After him making it clear he was heading out of the doors at the Camp Nou come to the end of the current campaign, many were sure a pre-agreement was on the horizon, as all clubs are allowed to talk to the player since the year turned 2021.

More from Manchester City

Manchester City has fallen behind in the Lionel Messi race

As we approach the final few days of January and edge closer to the transfer window closing, it’s clear Man City have slowed down in their pursuit of him and a January move is entirely off.

Supporting such a statement is the latest reports coming out of PSG, who are looking more like his next destination.

Following the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino to Le Parc des Princes, Messi’s countryman, talks of them working together at the Ligue 1 outfit have heated up.

The club’s boss and manager have made interesting comments on the Messi matter – not denying it, neither confirming it. The fact they want to add Sergio Aguero to the attacking line could have the Barcelona legend intrigued in a Paris move over any other options.

Sad news for Premier League lovers

If he does decide to snub Man City and ignore a Guardiola reunion for a Poch project instead, it would be sad news for all Premier League lovers. It would have been great to see what he is still capable of at his age.

Yes, it will be tough to judge him at 33-years-old and see him make a valuable impact on the EPL but it is one of the world’s best players we are discussing here. It would have been interesting to see if he can produce week in and week out in one of the most demanding leagues in the world, England’s top flight.

Although, it must be said, who wouldn’t be in favour of a Neymar-Messi retake? Throw Mauricio in the mix and you got one exciting prospect for the Champions League next season. It is scary to think one of the world’s best players is about to become a free agent.

A January move for Messi might be dead but this doesn’t cancel out Manchester City from going in for him during the summer window. None of the clubs mentioned in this post would pass on the opportunity of a Lionel capture.

Who do you think Messi will sign for if/when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season?
