Kevin de Bruyne played a key role in Manchester City’s recent triumph over Chelsea. They are now in talks to extend his contract at the Etihad.

According to recent reports, Manchester City wants to extend the contract of their star player, Kevin de Bruyne. The world-class playmaker’s current deal expires in 2023.

They see it as one of their biggest priorities to tie him down long-term. They want to ward off interest from European rivals who are eyeing a move for him. The player is representing himself as his former agent was arrested in August.

The transfer news specialist Fabrizio Romano tweeted regarding the contract extension of de Bruyne. According to the Italian journalist, the negotiations are heading in the right direction and the announcement can be expected anytime soon.

The reporter tweeted:

"Negotiations between Manchester City and Kevin de Bruyne [himself, no agent involved] on a new contract are going on in the right direction. The feeling around the club is that the agreement is ‘very close’."

Since joining Man City from German outfit VFL Wolfsburg in 2015, the Belgian midfielder has been a monumental figure in Pep Guardiola‘s trophy quest and success.

Barring an injury-struck 2018/19 season, the player has reached double-digits in terms of G/A since his arrival. Last season the player had 33 G/A to his name in the English Premier League. The Belgian is currently valued at €120 million in the transfer market.

When asked regarding his contract extension during the November international break, the 28-year-old stated that he is happy to stay at the club.

Talking to Belgian TV Station VTM Nieuws, Kevin de Bruyne mentioned:

"I am at a good club. Good owners. Good club. We are a bit in talks – not advanced. At the moment I am doing the talks myself. I would like to stay with the club, so it’s easy. If I didn’t want to stay, it would take someone to mediate. But when you want to stay, it’s not so difficult(Via: Guardian)"

The player’s former agent was arrested in a money-laundering case and since then, the Player of the Season has been negotiating deals himself.

Back in May, when the odds were against City because of a possible Champions League suspension, the player was unsure about his stay in Manchester. However, the club were only fined and no other sanctions were imposed on them.
