Georginio Wijnaldum’s future at Liverpool could be a bid away from being none existent forcing Klopp to have a sitdown with the player.

It has been no secret and he is probably one of few players who have an unsure fate at Anfield. The talks of a Gini Wijnaldum exit has been the conversation of Merseyside, as signs of a new player arriving at Melwood fades away with each passing day.

After a long dispute over a contract extension and no breakthrough, it was announced that Liverpool was pulling out of the discussion altogether, resigned in losing him, and naming their price of £15 and no less.

Barcelona, with their inclusion of Ronald Koeman and the Messi saga, finally deflated, have come knocking on the door wanting to take the Netherlands’ international away, but for a low of £10m. Over the last few days, there has been no movement after reports believed Gini was making the switch to the Camp Nou.

He was happy with the idea of migrating to play under Ronald, as we are well aware the player has an excellent relationship with him, Frenkie de Jong, and is allowed to play in a more advanced role when in the national side. Nothing suggests it would be a bad move for the Premier League winner.

The boss will have his say

Now, the exit links have called out the big boss, Jurgen Klopp, who is said to be holding talks with his “perfect” midfielder to discuss his future. Klopp doesn’t want to lose him, neither does the club but will take money if it is the right price. Gini is willing to stay put if they can meet down the middle, whatever the middle is.

He prefers an Anfield stay, apparently. Which is a massive change of heart considering initial reports when they stalled on contract renewal talks. The club is willing to sell in order to fund the manager’s target Thiago Alcântara from Bayern Munich. So no party is being forced into making a move, as both hold strong hands.

Liverpool’s midfield has been key to their success over the past couple of years and a player who has plenty to do with that is Gini Wijnaldum. Jurgen Klopp’s rebuild consisted of the Dutchman, signing from Newcastle back when they were relegated from the Premier League in 2016.

Gini was one of Liverpool’s success stories where they acquired the services of an outfielder who went from the bottom to the top. The club’s know-how in getting the best players from clubs suffering the drop has been unmatched for a while now, and something they’ve gotten all of their counterparts to look into.

The perfect world for Liverpool? Having Wijnaldum agree to a contract extension while signing Thiago. But that world existed prior to the pandemic. They want to offload before bringing anybody in.

Klopp’s recent interview has probably discouraged all Reds about any incomings this summer.
