FPL Hero – John ‘Lord’ Lundstram (DEF, 144 points, 4.0m->5.2m (GW18)->4.6m)

We cannot do any awards for the 2019/20 season without mentioning the Lord. Last season there were a lot of expectations around Diogo Jota as he came up with Wolves as a designated midfielder despite often playing upfront, it turned out to be a bit of a dud. Lundstram came up with much less fanfare but was everything we want in an OOP player and more.

Sheffield United’s defence was strong from the outset, recording 4 clean sheets in the opening 10, while Lundstram’s position as a box-to-box mid meant he got a goal and an assist in that period as well.

The peak of the Lundstram ride was GW11 as he scored twice and got the clean sheet for a massive 21 points! There were more clean sheets and another assist to come before disaster struck. Sander Berge arrived in the January transfer window and Lundstram was dropped to the bench. It was amazing while it lasted.

Biggest Surprise – Danny Ings (FWD, 198 points, 6.0m->7.2m)

I spent a long time convinced Ings would breakdown and the points would stop coming. He scored 10 goals in 11 games between GW12 and GW22, at which point I finally gave in and THEN the points stopped. However, Danny Ings did not get injured and proved he could lead the line for Southampton across the season.

Of course, the massive break in the middle probably helped as it gave him a rest, but he also played all but 3 minutes after the restart, so my assumptions about his injury-prone nature were clearly wrong. I will not make the same mistake again next year, if he looks good going into the season I will certainly consider Ings for my week 1 team.
