The Final Fantasy Premier League Review of the 2019/20 season
FPL Awards
Season Keeper – Trent Alexander-Arnold (DEF, 210 points, 7.0m->7.7m)
Maybe it should be KDB considering he was the highest scorer, dethroning Salah with an enormous 251 points, but for me, TAA was always the best option and one I never considered selling.
A defender breaking 200 points is a relatively new concept (Andrew Robertson and VVD were the first to do it last year!) but TAA perfected it this year with his consistent returns. Even during Liverpool’s poor start defensively (thanks Adrian), he provided goals and assists to keep the points coming, then barely missed a minute as they put the league beyond doubt with 9 clean sheets from 10 from GW17!
There’s a lot of discussion around whether or not he should be the first name in your squad next season and obviously, it depends on price, but unless they make it ridiculous (ie 8.5m) I won’t be looking anywhere else for my first defender next year.
Best Value – Nick Pope (GK, 170 points, 4.5m->5.2m)
Value is the name of the game in many ways, how far can you stretch that 100m? Nick Pope was an FPL manager’s dream this season. The highest-scoring goalkeeper in the game, starting at just 4.5m!
I thought Burnley’s defence was underpriced at the beginning of the season thanks to a poor 2018/19 season, caused by their foray in the Europa League. It proved to be true, although the gem was not at centre back, but in between the sticks.
Pope provided points from saves, clean sheets, a penalty save in week 23 and more bonus points than any other goalkeeper! Burnley’s set up is almost perfect for an FPL goalkeeper; they allow a lot of shots from range, providing good save opportunities with low chances of scoring, and often only win 1-0, allowing Pope to shine in the BPS.
He will surely have a price hike next year, if he’s 5.5m I will look elsewhere, but at 5.0m he would be so tempting.
