Which of Aston Villa’s players could move on to better things this summer?
By Dean Caffrey
With 3 games to go, relegation to the Championship is looking likely for Aston Villa. This inevitably raises talks about which of the teams who remain in the Premier League could be tempted to nab one of Villa’s stars.
A few obvious names have stood out for the club this season, namely captain Jack Grealish, who has really used the captain’s armband to take his game to another level at times. His previous season in this league (the 15/16 season) was one blighted by off the field incidents and a lack of consistent form.
He did manage to score his first Premier League goal in the campaign though. It was his first full season as a regular first-team player, after all, he couldn’t have been expected to perform week in, week out.
Him stepping up his performances in his first campaign back in the big league certainly wasn’t guaranteed, Villa should be thankful he has because Grealish has dragged them through some games, which hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Clubs like Man Utd, Man City and Spurs, in particular, have recently been credited with an interest in his services. Villa won’t let him go cheaply, regardless of the division they find themselves in next season.
Tyrone Mings and John McGinn
Tyrone Mings and John McGinn are seen as two more sellable assets that would gather a decent fee if they were sold right now. Mings has been a solid performer this season but has been part of a defence that has conceded nearly 2 goals a game on average. Would this put off clubs from bidding for him?
Probably not, as it’s clear to see that he is a leader at the back, and he’s been a big part of an improved defensive performance from Villa recently. McGinn is one player who has done his best work in the first half of the season before he got injured.

He was scoring goals, taking plenty of shots, and surprising teams with his energy and graft in the early weeks of the season. The same form he has struggled to show since returning from injury, but you’d think that he would get snapped up by a Premier League team if Villa were to sell.
Douglas Luiz
Douglas Luiz is a player whose improved form has been a real bonus for Villa since returning, which I wrote about last week. Man City inserted a buy-back clause in his Villa contract when they sold him last summer, which indicates how highly they rate him if they want first refusal on any future sale.
It is perhaps still too early to say whether Luiz has the talent and ability to play for City right now, but he has certainly proved he is a competitive Premier League player at the very least. It certainly is a plus point that the club have valuable assets should they have to sell this summer. Raising money from sales shouldn’t be a problem.
Let’s just hope Villa is a Premier League club this summer so their stance to selling these players can be stronger and they can recuperate maximum funds from them.
