By Manchester City’s lofty standards, 2019-20 has been sub-par. However, they have many world-class players worthy of being the club’s players of the year.

Last May, a parade adorned with sky blue ribbons and t-shirts was held in Manchester as Pep Guardiola‘s men had lifted all four English domestic trophies, including the Premier League trophy for the second year in a row.

Manchester City had set a nearly impossible bar to reach. They had earned 198 points over the last two seasons. The defending champions had set records that were once considered unreachable.

However, last season was a bigger struggle for the club than expected as they and Liverpool fought a weekly battle for the title, which eventually was won by just one point. The Reds became the best second-best team in history by earning 97 points.

Manchester City had 98 points and the trophy.

The biggest question coming into the season was whether or not Manchester City would be able to maintain their insane run.

Due to injuries, fatigue, and Liverpool’s undefeated streak, MCFC fell quickly to a dimmer reality. At the stoppage of Premier League play, they were second, but 25 points off the pace.

By mostly every other club’s expectations, second place, and 57 points in 28 matches would be glorious. For City, it has been a disappointment, especially for a team that is arguably the most talented ever assembled in the Premier League era.

There are many candidates for this club’s players of the year honors. So many that it’s hard to choose just one.
