Harry Kane will go down as a Spurs legend, but with the team on a downward trajectory, he must push himself to find a club where he can win trophies.

It seems like only yesterday when 21-year-old Harry Kane burst onto the scene during the 2014-15 season for Spurs, scoring 21 goals in his first real full Premier League season. The rest, as they say, was history, as Kane quickly became the face of the North London club.

Now, the England captain can say that he has forged a great career out of seemingly nothing, as he will undoubtedly go down as a Spurs legend. He also has a great chance of becoming England’s greatest ever goalscorer by the time he retires – a feat of monstrous nature.

However, Harry Kane is on the verge of turning 27, and his trophy cabinet remains as dusty and spider-ridden as it was when he started his career. A player of his quality deserves to be competing for top trophies year-in, year-out, and Spurs aren’t in a position to do that right now.

Of course, I’m not questioning his decision to stay at Spurs until now. The club gave him everything, and they were on a strong upward trajectory for a long time, culminating in a Champions League final appearance and a brand new, world-class stadium.

However, the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino marked the end of that upward trajectory for Spurs, and they now seem a million miles away from getting to a Champions League final, despite achieving that feat less than a year ago. It goes to show how quickly things can change in football.

Now, heading into the best years of his career, it has become clear that Spurs cannot give Harry Kane what he wants anymore. The star striker should look to move to a bigger club once the market allows him to. Of course, this wouldn’t come cheap, which is why it’s nearly impossible to see him leaving the club this summer, but it should happen eventually.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid will be in need of a starting striker soon, with Suarez and Benzema heading into the final few years of their careers. At either of these clubs, Kane would be in a prime position to compete for big trophies both domestically and on the European stage.

At this rate, Kane is likely to be this generation’s ‘forgotten man’. A great player who did not achieve enough significance with his career to be remembered in the future. If he leaves Spurs and wins trophies, that can all change.
