Don’t expect any massive transfers from Premier League clubs this summer

While we are so used to seeing some of the big Premier League clubs splash the cash during the summer window, don’t expect to see any of it this year.

A few months ago, we were entertaining the ideas of seeing players like Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz balling out in the Premier League next season. While these players were set to cost over £100 million, we hardly bat an eyelid, due to how much money we see thrown around by the ‘big 6’ during any Premier League transfer window.

Under these circumstances though, these deals seem a universe away, as clubs deal with the monumental financial pressure that COVID-19 has put upon their bank accounts. While some of us might still expect to see some big transfers this summer, I wouldn’t expect any of them to exceed the £50 million mark.

Initially, the one club you could’ve seen continuing their ridiculous spending in these circumstances was Manchester United. After all, they love spending boatloads of money on players who aren’t always worthy of it, but Ed Woodward stated this week that the virus has derailed their transfer plans, and fans shouldn’t expect it to be a regular summer. Ed Woodward said the following this week in the Manchester United fans forum:

"“I cannot help feeling that speculation around transfers of individual players for hundreds of millions of pounds this summer seems to ignore the realities that face the sport.” – Ed Woodward"

So there you have it. If the mighty Manchester United are going to have to claw back their spending this summer, then you better be ready to see all of the other Premier League big-shots do the exact same.

This comes as a massive blow to the clubs that were in the race for Jadon Sancho especially, which includes the Red Devils as well. The England and Borussia Dortmund star was all set for a blockbuster £100+ million transfer this summer, but that all seems unlikely now.

In place of the massive deals we usually see, expect to see the top 6 clubs search for bargain deals, including free transfers, to improve the squad whilst also keeping the pressure on their finances at a minimum.

U23 players, along with over-30 players with expiring contracts, are likely to be the main targets for most clubs across Europe this summer, as they try to get the most bang for their buck.
