Thomas Partey signing would clearly show Arsenal’s ambition
Arsenal has been criticized for a lack of ambition for some time now, but the links to Thomas Partey show that they certainly mean business.
It’s tough to question the size of Arsenal Football Club, or their history, but one thing many have questioned over the past 10 years is their ambition.
Sure, the Gunners have signed some top players over the last 10 years, such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but these tended to be one-off signings that weren’t always surrounded with quality elsewhere.
Along with that, the Gunners held onto Arsene Wenger for far too long, which negatively impacted the culture around the club in general and prevented these big signings from hitting their potential with the club.
Now, with Mikel Arteta at the helm, the future looks bright at the Emirates, especially with some young stars like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and William Saliba set to play massive roles for years to come. It’s common knowledge that the Gunners don’t have a ton of room to spend money due to their massive wage roll and a lack of Champions League football, but lately, they’ve been signing some really strong players for modest fees that can help the club in the long-run.
Immediately, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney, Gabriel Martinelli, Bernd Leno, Matteo Guendouzi, and William Saliba come to mind.
These players were all signed within the last 2 summer windows and possess the quality to hit world-class levels. These signings, although they weren’t necessarily the big, flashy ones that Manchester City and Liverpool can pull off (apart from the massive Pepe signing), are promising and show clear ambition.
With Arsenal now being heavily linked to Thomas Partey, Atletico Madrid’s midfield stalwart, there’s the potential for even more impressive signings at the Emirates.
Partey is currently one of the best midfielders in the world at a Champions League club, so you do question why he would join Arsenal, but stranger things have happened. The Gunners still have massive pull, due to their success in the late 1990s and early-to-mid 2000s.
Of course, a deal for Partey is still a world away, especially with the current impact that COVID-19 is making on club finances across Europe, we don’t know whether it’s even possible. However, the links are good news for Arsenal, as it seems the player is indeed interested in their project. Bringing in the Ghanaian international would be Arsenal sending yet another message to the football world – that they aren’t disappearing, and they still mean business.
Signing Thomas Partey would be yet another piece of this Arsenal puzzle that looks more and more promising with each passing week, especially with Mikel Arteta at the helm. They may very well lose Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but this would not be the end of the world, especially if the club continues to spend their money wisely and prudently.
