With their new takeover nearing completion, Newcastle will be on the lookout for improvements in the coaching department. Enter Mauricio Pochettino.

It’s been quite some time since Mauricio Pochettino was (probably wrongfully) sacked by Spurs just 6 months after leading the club to their first-ever Champions League final. The sacking took place back in November, around 6 months ago.

Despite being one of Spurs’ most successful managers ever, Pochettino’s lack of success during the first few months of this season was devastating for the club, who were relying on some continued success and an upward trajectory, in general, to help alleviate some of the financial pressure they were facing after building their new stadium.

Sacking Pochettino seems to have been redundant, as Spurs have not fared much better under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Let’s focus on Mauricio Pochettino himself though – the Argentine manager, who many consider to be one of the best in the world, has actually not been linked very actively with any clubs since his sacking, which comes as a surprise to many.

There were some odd, unrealistic links to Arsenal after they sacked Unai Emery, and there were a few whispers of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Juventus, but all of the top clubs in the world actually seem to be happy with their current coaches.

This means that Pochettino might be out of work for quite some time unless he takes on a more challenging project – even more challenging than the one he had at Spurs.

Enter Newcastle United, who are on the verge of a massive financial takeover and will likely be looking for a new, modern manager to lead them forward if the deal goes through.

Mauricio Pochettino might prefer a step up from Spurs, as he has indeed proved himself worthy enough to be given a chance at a Champions League or league title-contending club, but this Newcastle job might be too tough to pass up. After all, he would likely have considerable financial freedom and plenty of leeway within the job itself.

This idea isn’t just coming from me, by the way. According to ESPN, Newcastle are indeed interested in bringing Pochettino on board to steer them through this potentially vital phase in their club history. Former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is also being touted as a potential Newcastle target.

These links quite clearly show that Newcastle’s new owners mean serious business. They are certainly going to be looking at long-term development to eventually challenge for Champions League places and significant trophies. Who better than proven club-builder Mauricio Pochettino to lead them to it?
