Tottenham came into the new Premier League season with high expectations, but their quest for silverware went awry along the way. Four matches were pivotal to their season.

The scenes… Mauricio Pochettino, manager of Tottenham, on his knees, tears welling up in his eyes and moments later celebrating wildly with fans who had made the away trip of a lifetime. The images showed how much this match meant to him and how much it had taken.

Spurs did the impossible. Tottenham completed a turnaround and came back from being three goals down on aggregate as Lucas Moura‘s goal in the waning seconds sealed the Champions League semi-final against Ajax. The unexpected victory put Spurs in an unlikely place.

The Champions League final. Sadly, Tottenham lost in the final to the other team that had a fairy tale semi-final comeback of their own, Liverpool.

For Pochettino and Spurs, the season ended with something to build on for the future. They had shown they could be among the elite in football across Europe. The expectations for the coming season were high.

As the 2019-20 season started, clouds of doubt began to form over the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In their last 12 matches in the Top Flight as Spurs were making their incredible European run, they had only won three.

The cloud would only get more prominent as their current campaign in the Premier League would be filled with more unexpected moments.

These are the four matches that have defined their season.
