In Manchester, the defending champions were in a similar place to the year before. However, their narrative had been established.

They showed a winning mentality along with the ability honed by Pep Guardiola to become unstoppable themselves and win the decisive match and to defend their crown.

The City manager eluded to this in his pre-match press conference two days before the match:

"I don’t know [if the title race is over]. I think in November, it’s never over. I know that if we lose, then it might be over but we have a lot of games to play. The experience in the squad is to fight till the end. Via: SuperbiaProelia.com"

However, Guardiola also mentioned something else that concerned City’s supporters. He confirmed that their starting goalie, Ederson would not be able to play against Liverpool. Manchester City was going to be without their best goalkeeper and best defender, Laporte.
