It has been confirmed that EURO 2020 will not take place this June-July as proposed and will be pushed back till the summer of 2021.

UEFA delegates have decided to push back the all-important EURO 2020 to next year summer. This is because UEFA feels the current, ongoing league campaigns are more important to conclude, calling it a “priority”.

"Priority given to completing domestic competitions in an unprecedented solidarity move by UEFA. Working group set up to examine possibilities for this season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions.UEFA today announced the postponement of its flagship national team competition, UEFA EURO 2020, due to be played in June and July this year. The health of all those involved in the game is the priority, as well as to avoid placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services involved in staging matches. The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, to be completed. (Via: uefa.com)"

Is this a good move?

I believe it’s a great start to help make other decisions easier as we wait for the spread of COVID-19 to slow down or stop, completely. Many things need to be sorted out in respective league campaigns.

No winners have been announced. No teams relegated. No team gets a promotion. Too many teams lose out on the European continent, and globally in fact, that decisions like when will EURO start need to be made.

The tournament hasn’t begun yet, therefore giving them little limitations of when or where it will be held. Having it in one country has to be a massive consideration with the current situation. However, the new EURO initiative to have it all over Europe was an exciting prospect.

They must try to keep it in line with their new vision, even though some are against it. It was after all former UEFA president Michel Platin’s idea to have a “pan-continental tournament for Euro 2020”.

With how the market has dropped drastically, travelling and other things put on hold, price hikes are bound to take place. This puts the whole pan-continental tournament in jeopardy.
