Which Premier League club is landing Jadon Sancho this summer?
Manchester City
As stated, Sancho was in City’s youth system before going to Dortmund so there has been a natural link present for a return. With the possible departure of Leroy Sane in the summer, it is reported that City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, sees Sancho as a replacement. Guardiola is also looking to freshen up the club in the summer after a disappointing season by the Cityzens’ standards, making Sancho a solid target.
In Manchester City’s favor, it is possible that they can get a discount on the transfer as part of current contract clauses. There is no doubt that Pep’s club can afford a high priced transfer, and the possible discount and familiarity of both parties does help make City an excellent transfer destination.
Chelsea
The Blues have also been a solid top contender for the English international. There was a report in December indicating that Chelsea was preparing an offer north of $100 million for Sancho. It’s a move they can definitely afford. Due to their recently cut short term transfer ban, Frank Lampard’s club has not been spending money recently. Per Transfermarkt, they are sitting on a “surplus” of $107.53 million from this seasons transfer business.
Chelsea appears to be a decent fit for Sancho. The front line is thin and generally fairly young, except in the right-wing slot. Pedro and Willian are both over thirty and their form has been inconsistent at best.
The only other right-winger is a former teammate and the man Jadon displaced from his spot in Dortmund – Christian Pulisic. The Blues front line has a talented set of youngsters in Callum Hudson-Odoi (19 years old) on the left-wing and Tammy Abraham (22 years old) as a center-forward. Sancho could fit potentially in an attacking midfield slot which is occupied by 21-year-old Mason Mount who has also shown significant progress.
Chelsea is in the fourth spot in the Premier League, but its a little tenuous. They have a manager that is showing promise, but the jury is still out on how well his project will go. The Blues have the money to spend but already transferred in someone in Sancho’s primary role last summer. So it remains somewhat murky if it’s truly a good fit for the Englishman at Chelsea.
However, in Chelsea’s favor is their location – in Jadon’s hometown London. I’m not sure it is enough.
