Manchester City’s most recent fixture against West Ham has been rescheduled for next week in a decision neither team wanted.

The fixture for Man City and West Ham was originally scheduled to have been played on the 9th, was cancelled due to Storm Ciara, which has heavily hit parts of the UK with wild weather. Whilst both teams would have originally welcomed a fixture rescheduling (due to squad issues and poor recent form), neither team will be especially happy with the new date.

The Premier League is currently in the midst of a novel ‘winter mini-break’ styled on European leagues such as the Bundesliga, which shuts down for a month in the middle of the season. However, the fixture rescheduling cuts short the rest period for both teams involved.

West Ham’s currently in the midst of a horror run of form, and David Moyes’ men would welcome the chance to regroup and integrate new signings and injured players. City, too, has endured a slight dip in recent fortunes. Pep’s men have lost each of their last 2 games, with Spurs all but ending their title hopes, last week.

More from Manchester City

For City, the rescheduled date at the Etihad kicks off a hectic run of 6 games in 4 different competitions, in just over two weeks. This includes a crucial top-4 clash with Leicester City, the Champions League first leg away to Real Madrid, and the League Cup final.

All this comes at a time when City are missing key men Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane – although all are set to return before the end of February. West Ham’s next month is arguably even more crucial, with their next 6 or 7 games all but deciding their fate in the relegation battle.

After City, they face Liverpool, Arsenal, Southampton and Chelsea in a terror run of games. With this in mind, the winter break will be crucial for Moyes to quickly bring key signing Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek up to speed and welcome back injured regulars like Antonio, Anderson and Fabianski.

Ultimately, whilst the shortened break both teams will enjoy, might prove crucial in both teams’ run-in, there is no other real date the league can choose to reschedule.

The end of season run is notoriously fixture-heavy, and with City’s involvement in Europe, they may ultimately prefer an extra fixture now than at the season’s end.
