All of the next five fixtures are direct relegation battles, even though they sit outside the relegation slots. The point-gap is so small, it’s anybody’s season to get demoted to the EFL Championship.

The first is a home tie where they play the Clarets, who sit on the same points but above them on goal difference. This would be the hardest of the lot, as both teams have found strong form in the final stages of the league run.

A win in this one would set a good pace for the four fixtures thereafter. They then welcome the Villains to St. Mary’s in a clash to keep themselves above the visits, who they sit in front of by six points. This should be all the points taken and no questions asked.

What comes next is a trip to an unpredictable Hammers’ side. They sit uncomfortably in 18th place and are wanting out of the relegation slot. Only six points above them make it a must-win affair for the home side. A draw on the road wouldn’t be such a bad result for Ralph.

Following their clash on the road, is a visit from the Magpies. Another team currently on the same points as the Saints but a seat above them in the standings. A home clash or any home clash in these six encounters are must-wins. They are the most instrumental to their Top Flight stay.

Southampton’s Next Five EPL Fixtures

Southampton vs. Burnley
Southampton vs. Aston Villa
West Ham vs. Southampton
Southampton vs. Newcastle
Norwich vs. Southampton

The last of this run is the only match where anything less than a win will be considered a poor result. The trio of Aston Villa (47 goals), Norwich (47 goals), and the Saints (46 goals) hold the poor record for most goals surrendered to this season. Everything says intriguing battle.

Being stuck in the middle allows them to play with freedom and less pressure than the other teams fighting the good fight. Having Ward available during this time should supply enough morale boost for the next six essential Premier League outings.
