Spurs’ audacious attempt to bring Gareth Bale back to the club this month actually had some traction, but eventually fell through.

Gareth Bale’s time at Spurs was the stuff of legends. The former PFA Player of the Year was a revelation during his time at White Hart Lane, transforming from an underperforming young left-back to one of the best wingers in world football.

Although he hasn’t been at Spurs for nearly 7 years now, the love affair between him and the club still exists, and Spurs have always had an interest in bringing him back – at least if you believe all the rumours from over the years.

Well this month they tried again, with new boss Jose Mourinho sanctioning an attempt to bring the Welshman back to the club where he made his name.

Of course, any deal would have been extremely difficult to pull off, with Bale’s wages being so high and with the hesitant nature of the January window in general continuously making things more difficult for pretty much every club in Europe.

According to the Mirror, Spurs sent representatives to Real Madrid to try and hash out a deal this week. Bale would have needed to take a pay-cut to join Spurs of course, which he wasn’t willing to do, but Spurs formed a complicated plan to circulate the money throughout the 3 parties and ultimately try to satisfy each point of the triangle.

Ultimately, the Mirror claims that deal became too difficult and Spurs were forced to abandon the audacious attempt for the time being.

Don’t be surprised to see similar rumours pop up again in the summer though. Bale has infamously struggled to settle in at Madrid and has never quite been a favourite of Zidane’s. If Spurs really want to, they can get this deal done eventually – it seems to have been just too difficult to pull off mid-season.
