Giovani Lo Celso has been superb for Spurs in recent weeks, which will lead to him signing for the club permanently, according to Jose Mourinho.

It was a slow start for Giovani Lo Celso in a Spurs shirt – there’s no denying that. Every year plenty of new signings struggle to make an impact in the Premier League until a few months in, and sometimes even a season or two in.

However, Giovani Lo Celso found his feet quicker than fellow new Spurs midfield signing Tanguy Ndombele, and it has allowed him to cement a place in the first XI and really display his qualities on a weekly basis.

While Lo Celso is at Spurs on a loan deal, an obligation to buy has been included in the contract, with the fee reportedly set at £27m this month, or £34m in the summer. Since Spurs seem to be absolutely sure that they want to keep him around, they should certainly look to save a bit of cash and complete the deal this week.

Jose Mourinho, Spurs’ manager, has confirmed this week that the club is indeed looking to keep Lo Celso permanently:

"“I think the boy is earning the decision [to sign him]…He’s making an easy decision for the club to execute the option…By himself he made the decision that the club is going to execute the option. That’s normal, he earned it.”"

With that quote alone you can see how impressed Mourinho has been with the Argentine’s rise to relevance at Spurs, after a tricky start under Pochettino. Even the imminent departure of Christian Eriksen, who has been Spurs’ creative fulcrum for 7 years, seems like a minor detail with Lo Celso playing the way he is.

The Argentine brings a certain flair and technical dynamism that has been missing from Spurs’ midfield ever since Mousa Dembele left the club.

Lo Celso and Ndombele are both key long-term pieces for Spurs, and once the latter starts playing to his potential, they are almost guaranteed to become a consistent, quality midfield for the North London club. Lo Celso sticking around long-term could be crucial to their success in the long run.
