Spurs to sign Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose as striker reinforcement
With Harry Kane reportedly out for the rest of the season, Spurs are on the verge of signing Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose as a reinforcement.
Despite a long period of poor form and a managerial sacking, Spurs are still in the race for a top 4 spot, as they currently sit just 6 points back of Chelsea with the Blues struggling to pick up points over the last 2 months or so. If Spurs were fully fit and healthy, you would probably back them to land that 4th spot by the end of the season.
However, an injury to talismanic striker Harry Kane has left a gaping hole at the top of Jose Mourinho’s team, and the Englishman is likely to be out for the rest of the season. With just a week left in the January transfer window, it seems that Mourinho was desperate to find a striker capable of filling the hole.
In comes Willian Jose, who plays for Real Sociedad in Spain. The Brazilian has been a consistent, middle-of-the-pack striker in La Liga over the last few years, and now seems set to sign for Spurs as they look for a replacement for Kane, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The biggest obstacle Spurs will face in their attempt to pull off this deal, is Willian Jose’s release clause. Of course, Spanish clubs are notorious for putting in ridiculously high release clauses in their player’s contracts to fend off clubs, but for a player like Willian Jose to have a €70 million release clause is a bit silly.
It’s unlikely that Spurs would have to pay that full fee, but a deal would still be expensive, as Sociedad likely wouldn’t have enough time to sort out a replacement, and Willian Jose is their top scorer this season with 8 goals.
Jose has been pulled out of the Real Sociedad squad until this issue is resolved.
While Willian Jose would be an adequate replacement for Kane until the end of the season, it seems ridiculous for Spurs to be spending so much money on a 28-year-old who has yet to cross the 15-goal barrier in a league season, just to bench him next season when Kane is back fit. The deal doesn’t quite make sense, but if Spurs are really that desperate for a centre-forward then, so be it.
