The 3 Premier League clubs that should be in for Edinson Cavani
Edinson Cavani’s contract is expiring, and he could be available for a cut-price deal this month. 3 Premier League clubs should be hot on his tail.
There aren’t many strikers in the world who have been more prolific over the last 10 years or so than Uruguay and PSG striker Edinson Cavani. To be exact, only 3 players, Lionel Messi (522), Cristiano Ronaldo (477), and Robert Lewandowski (324) scored more goals in the 2010’s than him (309).
While Cavani is heading into the twilight of his career at nearly 33 years old, he still has plenty to offer in front of goal. The Uruguayan has been at PSG for the last 7 years, but that tenure seems set to come to an end, as Mauro Icardi has stolen his spot in the XI.
Now, with less than 6 months left on his contract, Cavani is being linked with a move away, and has handed in a transfer request, according to PSG sporting director Leonardo.
Whether that move comes this month or in the summer remains to be seen, but there are a few Premier League clubs who could realistically sign Cavani, and could certainly use a player like him in their squad:
Spurs:
Jose Mourinho’s Spurs have a bit of a problem. Actually, scratch that – they have a huge problem, with star striker Harry Kane set to miss the rest of the season with a devastating hamstring injury. Having let go of Fernando Llorente, Spurs don’t have a natural back-up centre-forward in their squad, which has forced Lucas Moura to inadequately attempt to fit the hole left by Kane.
As they chase top 4, adding a player like Edinson Cavani could mend the hole at the top end of Spurs’ XI, giving them a true #9 to play through once again.
Manchester United:
One of the most gaping holes in Manchester United’s squad is the lack of a natural centre-forward. They never quite replaced Lukaku, Rashford and Martial are both better out wide, and it’s unfair to ask so much of young Mason Greenwood in the striker role. The Red Devils missed out on Erling Braut Haland to Dortmund, but they could certainly persuade Edinson Cavani to make his way to Old Trafford to score some goals and help out the youngsters over the short-term.
Marcus Rashford is also out for the foreseeable future due to Solskjaer’s negligence, so Manchester United need to add some goalscoring to their lineup if they are to challenge for top 4 like they hope to.
Chelsea:
While Chelsea and their starting centre-forward Tammy Abraham had an excellent, prolific start to the Premier League season, they have struggled mightily in the last couple of months, as purple-patches for the likes of Mount, Pulisic, Abraham, and even Lampard himself have fizzled out. Now, it’s becoming clear that this young Chelsea team is in desperate need of some leadership, and some quality in the forward line.
The Blues are consistently struggling to convert chances these days, and while Abraham is still among the best goalscorers in the league this season, his form has been continuously slowing down as the weeks go by.
Edinson Cavani would help the Blues convert more chances to win the matches that they are deserving of winning, and bring the team some much-needed leadership as they look to hang on to their top 4 place – something that looks more and more unlikely as the days go by.
