Liverpool hold onto three points with 10 men against a determined Brighton
Liverpool stretches further away in the title race after collecting all the spoils from their Anfield clash against Brighton.
You could notice the tension around Anfield in the last 20 minutes or so as if it was a dark grey cloud looming over the stadium. The supporters counting the ticks and tocks on the clock of each millisecond. This, especially after Alisson got sent to an early shower after being shown red.
It was much of the same from Liverpool as they went another game without a clean sheet and yet another controversial moment took place in the title race. A 2-1 ball game was just enough for the Reds to take it all and lead the Premier League by 11 until further notice.
Match recap
Liverpool’s commandeering chief of defence, Virgil van Dijk was also the dictator in front goal. A brace in the first half scored six minutes apart. Two set-pieces take by the gent Trent. The opener from a costly free-kick and the second a corner.
Both A-A specialities were met by his defence boss, VVD. It was the perfect manner in which to head into the half-time break. It was looking to be one busy day at the office for Mathew Ryan between the sticks.
Little did we know Alisson Becker was getting bored on the other end decided the handball rule does not apply to him OUTSIDE of the box. Laughably, it applied for everyone else in the stadium as well as referee, Martin Atkinson.
A red card for handling the ball in no man’s land and a free-kick to the Seagulls just before the game had 10 minutes plus adding time left. Adrian stepped in and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was sacrificed.
The substitution changed nothing. A cheeky and sneaky free-kick was controversially taken while Adrian was still busy organising his wall. This is where Lewis Dunk took advantage and pulled one back for the visitors.
Potter’s Brighton came with strong phases and kept peppering the Liverpool goalmouth, but Klopp’s men stood firm and Liverpool limped over the line. The final whistle was blown and that dark grey cloud left after a gust of relief swept through Anfield and Liverpool.
Liverpool lead Brighton’s worry continues
Jurgen Klopp takes an 11 point lead at the summit of the Premier League after the duo of Chelsea and Man City dropped points. Their lead can only be shortened to nine points if Leicester City manages to win their matchup against Liverpool’s out-of-form neighbours, Everton.
Brighton’s woes will carry on for some time as they suffer from another defeat and make it three losses in as many games. They dropped from 12th place to 15th and are now three points away from the drop zone.
It won’t get any easier for Graham Potter as he is tasked with having to take on an Arsenal under new management next. Liverpool’s next test is a grudge match against the same team they need to stop Rodgers’ men on Super Sunday. Their bitter neighbours will work hard in trying to stop the Reds from claiming their first Premier League title.
