Chelsea and Liverpool lucky in their individual fixtures in the last of Matchday 5
Valencia 2-2 Chelsea
Frank Lampard and his Chelsea side all but won their fixture. It was a terrific encounter held between the pair at Mestalla Stadium. It was a proper CL clash that had almost everything in one fixture.
Early goals. Goals in either half. A penalty and then a penalty save. A keeper error, a comeback, and so much more drama. It was a great showing that lasted right up till the final whistle of the game.
Valencia’s Carlos Soler drew first blood. It was later cancelled out by a player who didn’t score for them since joining last season. Mateo Kovačić was that player and the Blues first-half hero.
These goals scored were a minute apart from each other, scored in the 40th and 41st minute of the first half. Chelsea then went one better after shifting the powers of the footballing Gods in their favour.
After the break, captain America Christian Pulisic came to the party and gave the boys and Frank from Stamford Bridge the lead. A friend from Anfield came over to visit during this time? Who was that friend?
Controversy. Almost disallowed for offside but VAR ruled in favour of the away side and they went ahead with the Christian Pulisic goal.
It takes one Kepa and you could lose all the points
More drama unfolded with every second that passed by. A silly penalty was gifted by midfielder Jorginho. A gift that was not accepted by Valencia. Kepa who stood big did his job to save the kick from the 12-yard spot.
As time wore down and the game was reaching its 90-minute limit, Kepa took his accolade as the best keeper of the night and become the worst. Whether it was meant or not, Kepa could have done something about it.
A shot/cross, a “sross or chot” from Daniel Wass met no head or foot but bulged the back of the net. Site expert and fellow colleague, Mahith called him out and believes the price paid for the Spaniard has still not been justified.
This led to Chelsea almost not winning the fixture. Lampard once again could not close down shop and see out what was meant to be three points away from home.
Gratefully, a point shared and a chance to take all the spoils in their last Champions League meeting. A meeting that will take place at Stamford Bridge against Lille, a team they’ve beaten on French soil.
A draw on the other end (Ajax vs. Valencia) and a win for Chelsea will do the trick. A loss for either of the other two competing for a qualifying spot will do more justice for the Blues. But that’s only if the Blues take all the points in their own fixture.
As Frank Lampard stated, Their Champions League fate lies in their own hands.
