Are Liverpool pretty much already Premier League champions?
We are now 1/3 through the 2019-20 Premier League season, with Liverpool 8 points clear atop the table. Do the Reds already have the title in their grasp?
We were all expecting a title race this Premier League season – let’s just get that out now. In a similar fashion to what we saw in 2018-19, where Manchester City finished 1 point ahead of Liverpool to capture the title, we thought the 2 Premier League heavyweights would go head to head in a heated, season-long affair.
While that dream might still end up coming true, it certainly doesn’t look likely at the moment, with Liverpool 9 points clear of Manchester City atop the table, and 8 points ahead of Leicester City, who sit in 2nd place.
Pep Guardiola’s team can’t afford a single slip-up from now on, as they aim to win their 3rd straight title – which looks like a more and more unlikely ending as each week passes.
In reality, while Liverpool doesn’t have a Premier League title yet, their current generation has made up one of the best teams that the division has ever seen. Since the start of 2018-19 (51 matches ago), Liverpool has lost just once, which of course came against Manchester City last season at the Etihad.
Their consistency, mentality, and quality are all and mind-bogglingly high levels, and it seems they are on course to win the Premier League for the first time ever.
However, things can still change, and while Liverpool are still winning games consistently, their recent form has not been entirely convincing. They drew Manchester United at Old Trafford a few weeks ago, which could very well have been a losing performance on a different day, and it took late goals for them to beat Spurs in late October, Aston Villa early this month, and most recently Crystal Palace on Saturday.
If you take a look at the table, and take a look at Liverpool’s form, you might think that the title race is already over. However, things can change very quickly in football (just ask Mauricio Pochettino), and one blip in form for Jurgen Klopp’s men could hand an opportunity back to Manchester City.
