Less than 12 hours after sacking Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have officially announced the widely-speculated hiring of Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.

Well, if Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking came out of the blue for you, then this might come as an even bigger surprise to wake up to.

Jose Mourinho has officially become the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, less than 12 hours after the North London club announced the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, who had been in charge for over 5 years. There were rumours of discontent in the Spurs locker room, and club chairman Daniel Levy made the difficult decision to pull the trigger on Pochettino, who took the club to a Champions League final just 5 months ago.

"“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.” – Daniel Levy"

Now, in comes the infamous Jose Mourinho, who’s last management gig came ended around this time last year, when he was let go by Manchester United following a rocky tenure with the club, where he won a Europa League title along with a League Cup – both achieved in 2016-17. Mourinho has signed a deal which expires at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Of course, Mourinho is more renowned for his tenures with Porto, Inter, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, where he created an everlasting legacy as one of the greatest managers in football history. The Setubal-born manager has won 2 Champions League titles, 1 with Porto and 1 with Inter, and also won league titles and domestic cups in 4 different nations – the only man to ever do so.

There is no doubt that Mourinho brings significant pedigree to Spurs’ world-class new stadium, at a level the club has never seen before, but there are going to be significant question marks over his ability to work with the notoriously stubborn Daniel Levy, and bring success to the club. After all, Jose hasn’t been at his best for quite some time.

"“I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.” –  Jose Mourinho"

On the other hand, Spurs have a supremely talented squad, which is obviously deserving of a far better Premier League finish than the 14th spot they sit in right now.

It will be extremely intriguing to see how Jose Mourinho gets on at Spurs, especially as the club is of lesser stature and financial power than many of his previous ventures. He is now entrusted with winning back the trust of the dressing room and getting this club back to competing for a Champions League spot.
