Here’s your roundup of the Carabao Cup round of 16 action on Tuesday, with Man City taking on Southampton, Everton facing Watford, and Leicester City also in action.
The Carabao Cup continued on Tuesday, with the often-forgotten cup competition reaching the round of 16 stage. While a few of the regular Premier League names are still in the mix for the trophy, we also got to see some lower league sides tough it out for a quarter-final spot. 5 of the 8 fixtures took place on Tuesday, with Premier League sides featuring in 3 of the 5. The following 3 matches are set to be played on Wednesday.
While Everton-Watford was a rather enticing matchup, all eyes were on the Etihad, as Manchester City welcomed freshly-thrashed Southampton, who of course lost 9-0 rather infamously to Leicester City last Friday. Saints players donated their salaries from Friday to charity as sort of a payback to the fans, and were looking to bounce back in this match – unluckily for them, they had to come up against the defending champions of England.
The scoreline wasn’t as ugly as you might have expected this time however, with Manchester City winning 3-1 and cementing their place in the quarter-final. Aguero grabbed a brace for the Cityzens, with Jack Stephens scoring Southampton’s lone goal.
Now back to Everton vs Watford: this was a match that featured plenty of younger talent, that we’ve been wanting to see a bit more of. While there were some bigger names starting, such as Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean, we also got to see Watford’s Domingos Quina, who has caught the eye at youth level for Portugal. Everton took the lead through a Mason Holgate goal in the 72nd minute, before finishing off the match with a Richarlison goal in stoppage time.

The other Premier League side involved on Tuesday, Leicester City, beat Burton Albion 3-1 rather comfortably, with Youri Tielemans in particular carrying on his excellent form from their 9-0 win last Friday.
There were 2 other matches, and neither of them featured Premier League sides. League Two side Colchester United put their name into the quarter-final draw with an impressive win over fellow 4th division side Crawley Town. League One’s Oxford United also punched their ticket to the final 8, beating Sunderland in a nail-biter which went to penalties.
So Everton, Leicester, Manchester City, Colchester, and Oxford United will all be in the draw for the quarter-finals. The remaining 3 spots will be contested for on Wednesday, with a couple heavyweight clashes between top 6 Premier League sides headlining the proceedings.
