After the dire GW8 of Premier League football before the international break, we all thought the FPL could only get better. How wrong we were?

37 points average, no returns from the likes of Aguero, KDB, Aubameyang, Mane, Salah, Kane, Son, Abraham or Mount! VAR played a big part in FPL fortunes as well. Jimenez being denied 2 goals due to the new technology, Mane having one ruled out, and several penalty decisions also coming under scrutiny of the video referee.

I wrote in defence of VAR earlier in the year as it could and should be a great benefit to the game that removes injustices, but instead it is a slow, incomprehensible mess that has simply highlighted how flawed the laws of the game can be, while causing more controversy – we still do not know just how clear and obvious an error has to be for it to be overturned!

Hopefully, we can all move on fairly quickly from this next week, especially with Friday night football returning with Southampton vs Leicester; make sure you don’t forget the early deadline!

The big hope will be for another cricket score from Man City as they host Aston Villa, and as a West Ham fan who owns Salah and Robertson, I would very much like them to destroy Spurs.

There are also interesting potential banana skins for Man United (yet to win outside Old Trafford this season) away at Norwich, and Arsenal at home to Crystal Palace, who already claimed a big scalp at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Finally, before we look in detail at the best and worst options for this week, don’t forget it is Champions/Europa League week, with 7 English teams playing before Friday, so try not to go early in case we have to deal with a sudden injury crisis.
