Matchweek 1 of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League group stage has now concluded, so let’s take a look at how the 4 English clubs fared in their fixtures:

It was an eventful and energizing matchweek 1 in our beloved UEFA Champions League, which is now back for the 2019-20 season. Last year, English clubs served up an ace in the competition, with Spurs and Liverpool meeting for the first all-English final since 2008, when Manchester United clashed with Chelsea in the final.

Liverpool came out on top in Madrid back in June, winning their 6th European title, and they were in action this week in a tough opening fixture against Napoli. The runners-up Spurs were also in action, in a fixture against Olympiakos which seemed relatively straight-forward, but proved to be anything but.

Manchester City continue their hunt for a first ever Champions League win once again, taking on Shakhtar Donetsk to open out a group that they are fully expected to cruise through. Lastly, Chelsea made their return to Europe’s top competition after a successful year in the Europa League, taking on Valencia in a tricky group.

Lets take a closer look at how the 4 English teams fared in their opening fixtures, starting with last seasons 2 finalists:
