Chelsea and Manchester United drew to Sheffield and Southampton respectively on Saturday, further displaying the lack of experience and quality of their 2 managers, Frank Lampard and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

At the start of the season, the consensus choices to make top 4 in the Premier League were Manchester City, Liverpool, Spurs, and Arsenal. 3 weeks into the season, it’s hard to argue against it. Both Manchester United and Chelsea have made sluggish starts to the season, with both sides picking up just 1 win in their opening 4 matches. Manchester United’s only win did come against Chelsea in a 4-0 thrashing on opening weekend, while Chelsea’s only win came last week against Norwich City, by the barest of margins.

The reason for many believing that these 2 sides would be the ones finishing outside the top 4, is their managers, both of which are inexperienced.

While Lampard did well last season with Derby County, Chelsea is a completely different test, and a vastly more difficult one as well.

Solskjaer on the other hand, looked promising when taking over from Mourinho last season, but is now looking like the average manager that he always has been, picking up a baffling 1 win in 10 matches.

Both sides were in action on Saturday, and neither managed to pick up a win despite being in winning positions. Manchester United led Southampton through another Daniel James goal, but Janik Vestergaard cancelled that goal out, and the match ended that way, despite the Red Devils being a man up for the final 20 minutes or so.

Chelsea’s draw was worse, as they were up 2-0 on newly promoted Sheffield United at half-time, only to concede twice in the 2nd half, picking up just the 1 point. It could be a painful season for both these teams, as the likes of Wolves and Leicester breathe down their throats, vying for a top 6 spot.

Chelsea have a small excuse for their poor form, as they were transfer-banned in the summer window and were unable to bring in any new players, apart from Christian Pulisic who was signed last January but only began his Blues career this month. They also lost their best player Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, and he was someone who constantly bailed them out of matches on his own.

Manchester United on the other hand, spent well over £100 million this summer, most notably on defensive reinforcements in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. Solskjaer has also been managing them far longer than Lampard has Chelsea, so the Red Devils have far less excuses this season than the Blues.

Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard have a lot of learning to do if their teams are to be successful in the Premier League this season. The other managers in the top 6, Guardiola, Klopp, Pochettino, and Emery, have far more experience and have their teams playing much better football at the moment.
