Finally, using this methodology we can analyse potential rotation pairs, by looking at two teams fixtures and taking the best option for each match.

This is more commonly done for defensive pairings, so that’s what I’ll focus on!

Here are the rotation pairs, and the resulting fixture lists for each squad outside of the top 6 (plus Everton as they are essentially priced out of being a potential rotation pair), looking at the opening 10 weeks of the season.

Interestingly, despite Norwich having the worst fixture list in that run, they appear fairly heavy in the rotations because there are a few teams who perfectly compliment them. For example, when they face Liverpool and Man City in the opening weeks, Burnley plays Southampton and Brighton, presenting a good opportunity for a clean sheet.

There are some potential anomalies, for example, Leicester’s attacking strength at home is actually below 1, although this is not a match you would normally associate with a potential clean sheet!

This will be corrected throughout the season if the Rodgers effect kicks in and Vardy increases his output, and it shows why the statistics should only be considered as a guide.
