N’Dombele to Spurs would be an unusual but monumental transfer

Spurs aren’t often linked with massive transfers, but the links to Tanguy N’Dombele just won’t die down, and while the transfer would be unusual, it could also change the course of Spurs history.

If you ask anyone with a decent football mind to name their 5 best u23 midfielders in world football, each and every one of those lists would include Lyon’s Tanguy N’Dombele, probably alongside the likes of Arthur, Frenkie de Jong, Rodri, and whoever else they’d want to include.

Simply put: N’Dombele is that good of a player.

His agility, athleticism, technical quality, and drive combine to make him one of the most complete young footballers in the world, and we’ve seen that on display for the last 2 years or so with Lyon in Ligue 1 and in Europe. Of course, N’Dombele has been linked with massive clubs such as Real Madrid and Juventus over the course of the last year or so, but this summer, the links have been mostly between N’Dombele and Tottenham Hotspur – the Champions League runners up.

"“It’s true that Tottenham are a great team – a big club. They finished fourth in their league, they were finalists in the Champions League.” – Tanguy N’Dombele"

Spurs are not big spenders and never really have been. Their record transfer is £42 million for Davinson Sanchez – a fee which is considerably lower than the record transfers of each of their top 6 Premier League rivals. While Spurs would need to smash their transfer record to sign N’Dombele, they certainly do have that sort of money now that they’ve qualified for a Champions League final.

While Pochettino’s team is certainly one of the top sides in Europe these days, as the Champions League final appearance proved, it would be quite unusual to see them pull off a signing as big as Tanguy N’Dombele would be. However, it is also a transfer that could change the clubs future for the better in a massive way. N’Dombele is already on the doorstep of being a world-class midfielder, and his skill-set is well suited to the Premier League. He would instantly become a talisman of the league, not just of Spurs.

While N’Dombele did admit interest in a transfer to Spurs this week, it seems the clubs are still far apart in their negotiations, so while this would certainly be an interesting transfer, it isn’t particularly close to happening – yet…
