With the club stumbling to a 6th place finish in the Premier League, Manchester United are reportedly set to shift out a chunk of their deadwood this summer.

If you take a look at the Manchester United roster from top to bottom, there are a few names that you almost can’t believe are still on the clubs payroll. For such a massive, historic club, some of these players simply have not cut it, and should be nowhere near the first team. It seems the Manchester United hierarchy has realized this, as they are ready to sell a good chunk of their deadwood this summer itself.

This deadwood is spread out across many positions, and as many as 5 players are ready to be sold. We can’t forget that Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera have already confirmed their departures from the club, so this is well and truly an overhaul for the Red Devils.

Romelu Lukaku is set to move to Inter, with the Italian giants and their soon-to-be head coach Antonio Conte being admirers of the player, who has failed to reach his potential at Old Trafford. Alexis Sanchez could very well be joining him at Inter, or maybe even moving to Juventus, although his massive wages will prove to be a stumbling block in any potential deal.

At the back end of the pitch, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian are both almost certain to leave the club. Neither has made an impact in the first team in the last year or two and deserve to be playing regularly elsewhere.

Lastly, Juan Mata is also set to leave the club, as the early bloomer simply isn’t the player he used to be. In his early 20’s, he was nothing short of world-class, but now, when he’s supposed to be in his prime, he is a very average footballer. His rise and decline is very reminiscent of fellow attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil, who also peaked early.

All of these potential departures mean 2 things for Manchester United – they are overhauling the squad and are aiming to sign quality players as replacements. All of these players bar maybe Lukaku aren’t going to improve this team moving forward, and should certainly be sold.
