United’s defence can only be described as an unmitigated disaster. Changes need to be made here, as they were brutally exposed once de Gea’s form dropped away.

Victor Lindelof

Comfortably the most competent of the United centre-backs, which is like being the most iceberg-proof part of the Titanic. The Swede has shown genuine improvement over the course of the season and is in no danger of losing his place in the side.

Verdict: Keep

Chris Smalling

For better or worse, he has been a mainstay in the United defence since the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Can still be useful, and is an experienced head, but at this point should not be more than a backup option in case of rotation and injury.

Verdict: Keep, but only as a backup. If an offer comes, sell.

Phil Jones

Was bafflingly signed to a new contract that runs until 2023. Started his career off with plenty of potential, but injuries have completely derailed him. Horrendously inconsistent, his shortcomings were laid bare during the evisceration by Barcelona. Will be difficult to move him on with that new long-term contract, but it is time to cut ties.

Verdict: Sell

Eric Bailly

Bailly is a curious case. During his first season at United, his potential was clear, and he solidified himself as a fan favourite. However, during the following two seasons, he has regressed into an error-and-injury prone defender. He is still relatively young, but if his current depreciation continues, it cannot be long before he has to be moved on too.

Verdict: Cautiously keep

Luke Shaw

Showed flashes of his pre-injury best, and managed to be a consistent part of the first team for the first time since the days of Louis van Gaal. There is plenty of room for improvement, but his efforts were recognised as he was named United’s player of the year. Will easily keep his place for next season, as United have more pressing concerns at right and centre-back.

Verdict: Keep

Marcos Rojo

Rojo is a player whose value has oscillated during his time at United. During his numerous times in the treatment room, opinion on him will shift positively as his teammates struggle, but the moment he gets back out onto the pitch, he will show that he is merely another part of the problem. A walking red card, there is no reason to keep him on the wage bill.

Verdict: Sell

Ashley Young

The oldest member of the defence has already been signed to a one-year extension, but should not be a regular starter like he was in 2018-19. His performances dipped horrendously towards the end of the season, but should be a good dressing room presence. Likely to take over captaincy duties from the departing Antonio Valencia

Verdict: Keep, but only as a backup

Diogo Dalot

The young Portuguese wing-back is still very raw defensively, but showed a lot of promise going forward. Could be a long-term solution for the troublesome right-back spot.

Verdict: Keep

Matteo Darmian

There was widespread surprise when Darmain did not leave last summer. Looks likely to go this summer, and never quite fit in, in spite of his versatility.

Verdict: Sell

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Endured a troubled season at Fulham, but is a talented player that deserves an honest chance at United. The Dutch international can provide versatile backup, and should be retained.

Verdict: Keep

Axel Tuanzebe

On loan at Premier League chasing Aston Villa this season, Tuanzebe made 25 appearances for them, and is very highly regarded. With a Europa League campaign on the horizon, this could be his chance at United.

Verdict: Keep
