On Friday past, the Manchester side announced the three-year deal handed to and agreed upon with old faithful, Mike Phelan.

For me, this was one of the best pieces of business United has completed in recent years. Just after Sir Alex announced David Moyes as his then successor, the Scotsman got his own backroom staff in. The biggest mistake of his career.

The Norwegian’s words certainly express his delight of having Mike beside him and not lose his righthand man to the United board. Phelan was in discussion with Ed Woodward to become the club’s technical director. Denyingly, Ole wasn’t having it.

Ole on Mike Phelan:

"He walks around Carrington and players really respect him. They know what he can do and he’s worked with the best. I’m a young manager, I still feel I’m young anyway, and Mick’s got more experience in a few areas than I have. I’ve been a player under [Mick] and his knowledge, his experience, his demeanour; everyone in the club enjoys speaking to him, talking to him, discussing football with him. via @ManUtd"

This will certainly be the outlining of the identity trying to be recreated and a big step forward in the recovery of the sleeping giant. Next comes the shading to paint the bigger picture.
