Liverpool on the Verge of a Record-Breaking Empty-Handed Season
Despite going deep into the Champions League and hitting the mid-90’s mark for Premier League points, Liverpool are on the verge of another trophy-less season.
By the time this season wraps up, it’s very likely that Liverpool will have cracked the 95-point mark in the Premier League. After all, they currently sit on 94 points and will host Wolves at Anfield next weekend, where they haven’t lost in over 2 years. Therefore, we can probably assume that the Reds will pick up at least 1 point, which would bring them to 95 points in total, or all 3 points, bringing them up to 97. Despite being one of Europe’s grandest clubs, the Reds have not won a single Premier League title since the introduction of the competition in 1992 to replace the old First Division – but had they hit a total of 97 points in any of the 26 Premier League seasons, they would have been crowned champions 25 times, with the only exception being last season when Manchester City finished with a stunning 100 points.
Liverpool have had a historic, record-breaking Premier League season that deserves every accolade possible – but they likely won’t even lift the league title, as Manchester City have matched them all season long and currently sit 1 point ahead heading into the final match-week of the season.
It’s a depressing reality that is starting to set into the minds and hearts of all those associated with Liverpool Football Club – their team is on the verge of losing the Premier League title despite losing just once over the course of the entire 38-game season.
The margin of course, is very, very slender, and that can be seen in the league table. It was also however, seen in the match between Manchester City and Liverpool back in January. Sadio Mane’s goal-bound strike was cleared off the line by John Stones, with the ball being 11 millimeters away from crossing the line. That goal surely would have ensured that the Reds wouldn’t lose the match – an alternate reality that likely would have likely seen them lift the title this week. Unfortunately, it seems that those 11 millimeters will haunt Anfield for ages and ages.
Despite all of this disappointment for the Reds, who likely won’t win the Premier League title or any other trophy yet again this season, they can be extremely proud of their achievements. The Manchester City team was built over a far greater period of time and using a far greater sum of cash, and many of their players have experienced the requirements of winning the title, as they did it just last season. As for Liverpool, their squad is riddled with players who have tasted no such success in the past, making their sprint to the finish line all the more impressive.
It will take some tough work for Liverpool to continue competing with Manchester City in the coming seasons, but if recent transfer windows are anything to go off of, Jurgen Klopp may be able to match their spending in the transfer market.
Liverpool may be on the verge of falling agonizingly short of their goals this season, but they can be proud of their efforts and look forward to plenty more successful seasons with a hard-working, strong group of players and staff.
