Liverpool should sign Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the Summer
By John Wozniak
Liverpool will need to add to their squad this Summer. Several players are expected to leave Anfield ahead of the new season. Timo Werner would be a great addition for the Reds.
RB Leipzig confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League after defeating Freiburg 2-1. Leipzig forward, Timo Werner was on target with his 15th goal of the season. The German international has won 24 caps, and Transfermarkt values him at €58.50m. The Leipzig forward would give the Liverpool attack another dimension.
Liverpool have a settled front three of Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mané. There are questions over Liverpool’s strength in depth in attack and in particular Daniel Sturridge and his fitness. Sturridge has scored four goals in 25 appearances for the Reds this season, and his contract expires in June.
Liverpool will expect Jürgen Klopp to challenge for honours in the new season, that will mean bringing in new players. Werner could be just the player to take Liverpool to the next level. The 23-year-old has also scored three goals in three games in the German Cup. Werner can help Leipzig defeat Bayern Munich in this year’s cup final.
The Daily Mirror has reported Liverpool have contacted RB Leipzig about Werner’s availability. The paper reports that the striker has agreed to a contract with Bayern Munich, a deal that Leipzig has denied.
Talented players will attract the attention of Europe’s top clubs. Werner is a player full of confidence, he creates opportunities for himself and his teammates. Robert Lewandowski has had 131 shots in the Bundesliga, Timo is second on that list with 102 shots. Liverpool creates plenty of chances and Werner is likely to improve under the guidance of Klopp.
The Leipzig No.11 likes to play off the shoulder of the last defender, his pace ability to run with the ball makes him a threat. It’s easy to see why Leipzig would want to keep the services of a talented striker, but the opportunity to play in the Champions League every year could sway their star man.
The Premier League may not Werner’s preference. German football magazine Kicker claims Leipzig and Bayern Munich have been in ‘intense negotiations’ over a deal for Werner in recent weeks. Liverpool are expected to make two or three big signings in the Summer, they won’t go wrong with Werner.
