It wasn’t too long ago that Schär was a promising young center-back looking to make a move to the top of the Premier League.

Clubs like Tottenham and Arsenal were clamoring after the Swiss central defender in 2015, but he signed for Hoffenheim instead. He finally made his switch to the Premier League this summer, and after a tough start, has adapted well to life in England.

In his 19 starts for Newcastle this campaign, Schär has been the highest rated player according to whoscored.com on five occasions, registering three goals already. He has been key to his team’s success this season in Rafa Benitez’s structured, organized setup, where teams often spend much of the game camped in the Newcastle half.
