The Top 5 Worst Transfers of the Premier League Season
By Alan Mclardy
3 – Riyad Mahrez to Man City
Man City had been trying to sign Mahrez for a while, so it was no surprise when he arrived at The Etihad for 60 million pounds last summer.
Fans of the Premier League know how good Mahrez can be, but with an embarrassment of riches in midfield, he was going to have to prove to Guardiola that he deserved a starting place in the team.
But unfortunately for Mahrez, that hasn’t really happened.
Of his 26 Premier League appearances this season, half of them have been off the bench, and although he has six goals and three assists to his name, he just hasn’t been able to replicate his form from previous seasons.
We know Pep is a man with incredibly high standards, and Mahrez just hasn’t delivered this season.
2 – Fred to Man United
Fred is a player who had been linked with a big money move to The Premier League for quite a while.
Man United were the team who eventually managed to secure the midfielder, bringing him in from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee of around 52 million pounds.
The Brazilian became United’s fifth most expensive signing ever, but if things don’t improve quickly, he might also go down as one of the worst.
He has been unable to secure a regular starting place in the team, and when he has played he has rarely completed 90 minutes.
Like many of United’s recent transfers, he just isn’t good enough.
1 – Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to Fulham
It was going to take something special to beat Fred to the number one spot, but Anguissa has managed it.
Fulham broke their transfer record to sign the Cameroonian from Marseille for 30 million pounds on the last final of last summer’s transfer window.
Anguissa was one of 12 new signings at Craven Cottage for a combined total of over 100 million pounds. But instead of improving the team, the new signings disrupted a squad that had been so impressive in their promotion from The Championship.
It was a disastrous transfer window for Fulham, and Anguissa was surely the worst purchase of them all. He hasn’t looked anywhere near good enough for The Premier League, consistently squandering possession and being overrun in midfield.
He quite nicely sums up Fulham’s season: A complete and utter disaster.
