Out of the top 6 teams currently in the Premier League, one can conclude that the Red Devils have a weak squad compared to the rest of the teams.

Apart from David De Gea and Pogba, one can confidently say that no Manchester United player would be an improvement on what Premier League rivals Liverpool and Man City have in their ranks. So which areas of the squad should the Manchester United board try to strengthen ahead of next season? We take a look at areas where Man United are weak or short in options.

Right-Back

Ashley Young has been a revelation since being transformed from a winger to a full back under Jose Mourinho. But sometimes when he plays against strong and tricky players he seems to be a time ticking bomb ready to commit an error leading to a goal. Diogo Dalot, one of Mourinho’s last signings as a United manager, has been good going forward, but defensively he is a liability as one can really see in his game. He’s more confident going forward than defending and currently in the modern football world, full-backs should be able to do both jobs really well.

Aaron Wan Bissaka of Crystal Palace has emerged as one of the finest young full backs currently in the Premier League, and Manchester United should be looking at bringing him in.

Although the Red Devils will face fierce competition for his signature from their rivals such as Man City and Arsenal, they should be confident in striking a deal.

Centre-Back

A position that Jose Mourinho was desperate to strengthen last summer was centre-back. With the current defensive frailties shown by the United centre-backs, it’s clear why the Portuguese manager wanted another one in his ranks. Only Victor Lindelof has shown to be a consistent performer among the United centre-backs this season.

Koulibaly and Alderweireld were two of the centre-backs that were linked to the Old Trafford side and surely they are miles better than the likes of Lindelof and Bailly.

Right-Wing

Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez have all been tried in the position, but there’s no natural right-winger in the United team right now. Most of their attacks come through their left-wing and if a team stops them on that wing they seem to be blunt in attack, that’s why they need both wings to be on fire when they attack the opposition.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done well by bringing Tahith Chong to the first team but they need a proper, well-groomed player, such as Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho. The youngster is currently leading charts in terms of assists in the Bundesliga and has emerged as a key figure in Lucien Favre’s side in attack.
