Could Liverpool be Signing Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt this Summer?
Ajax’s young captain Matthijs de Ligt has spoke out this week about a potential move to Liverpool in the summer, as the 19-year-old colossus spoke about the club and his dutch teammate Virgil Van Dijk.
You must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about the talents of Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt over the past year or so. The 19 year old has become captain at the club and one of the very best players they have produced in years. Although de Ligt continues to shine in the Dutch capital, it seems that he will move on to greener pastures this summer as a host of Europe’s top clubs chase his signature – Liverpool included.
Just over a year ago, Liverpool’s defence was by far the weakest part of their team. Although their front 3 were scoring boatloads at the time, their backline was conceding far too many. This all changed when they signed Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton for a world-record fee for a defender, £75 million.

Since then, the Reds have had a genuine focal-point in their backline and are much stronger through the middle, as Van Dijk has grown into one of the best centre-backs in the world. Matthijs de Ligt plays with Van Dijk on the Dutch national team, and said this about playing next to him:
"“Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.”"
He also went on to say this, when asked about a potential move to Anfield in the summer:
"“It could happen”"
It certainly seems like de Ligt is an admirer of Liverpool, but it has been rumoured this week that Barcelona lead the race to sign the starlet. It makes sense, as Barcelona share a strong and historic connection with Ajax that dates back decades, and they’ve also signed Frenkie de Jong already. Juventus and Bayern are also strongly linked, but you can expect every other big club in world football to be keeping an eye on the situation.
Although Matthijs de Ligt would be a massive addition for Jurgen Klopp’s team, they are already quite strong in the centre-back position with Van Dijk and Gomez in particular. The Reds are not favourites for his signature by any means, but it must be pleasing for them to see a young star showing interest in joining the club, as Liverpool’s reputation continues to climb back to the level where it used to be.
