Super Sunday Takeaways: It’s advantage City as Everton hold Liverpool

It was business as usual in the Premier League when all but four teams in the top-10 picked up three points. Super Sunday started when Brendan Rodgers’ returned to the Premier League with Leicester City’s trip to Watford. Two derbies followed, first the West London derby and then the 200th Merseyside derby.

Super Sunday threw up three games with their own permutations on the league table. Leicester set out to impress their new manager at Vicarage road. Scott Parker took charge for Fulham’s relegation battle In South West London against rivals, Chelsea. It was all eyes on the day’s final game when Liverpool made the short trip to Goodison Park hoping to reclaim the league’s top spot. Things didn’t go to plan, but it made for interesting viewing.

Super Sunday Takeaways

Watford 2-1 Leicester City

Watford on course for a top-seven finish. The Hornets responded to a heavy midweek defeat with a 2-1 win, Troy Deeney had a fine performance. Javi Garcia’s side is in a race with Wolves and West Ham for seventh place. It took Watford just five minutes to open the scoring when Deeney scored his third goal in three games. Jamie Vardy scored a second-half equaliser but his effort was in vain. Watford sealed the win when Deeney’s through ball set up Andre Gray’s injury-time winner, sending Rodgers back to the East Midlands empty-handed. Watford had the resilience to bounce back from their midweek defeat and deserved the win.

The Leicester City manager has never won his first game in charge of a Premier League club. Watford’s next game is at Manchester City – Leicester host Fulham.

Fulham 1-2 Chelsea

Fulham look destined for the Championship. Parker and coach Stuart Gray have a huge task ahead of them. Fulham’s brave performance came to nothing against local rivals Chelsea, who wrapped things up with two first-half goals in 11 minutes. Gonzalo Higuain scored in the 20th minute to set up a first away win for Chelsea in 2019. Fulham pegged Chelsea back when Calum Chambers scored from a corner. The scores were level for three minutes. An unmarked Jorginho scored the winner for the Blues on 31 minutes, he was in acres of space.

Fulham played well and their supporters clapped them off the pitch, but they are 10 points adrift of safety. Top Flight survival looks unrealistic. A trip to the King Power is next up for the Premier League strugglers. – Chelsea head to Everton.

Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool hands the advantage to City. The Merseyside derby took it’s time to warm up, but Everton didn‘t park the bus, they played their part in an energetic game. The hosts took the game to Liverpool where they could. Virgil van Dijk was a rock in Liverpool’s back four, he was arguably their best player, that’s a worry for the title challengers – the Red’s front three didn’t have the best of games. Mo Salah had a great chance to score in the second half but a poor first touch let him down. Salah’s recent goalscoring form is a concern.  Michael Keane had a good game in Everton’s defence.

Everton had a good chance at the other end when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header forced a save from Alisson Becker. Liverpool hit Everton on the counter but they never really looked like breaking the deadlock. Jürgen Klopp made a trio of changes, bringing on Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Adam Lallana. Everton deserved their point. Manchester City has the advantage at the top-of-the-league. Everton travels to St James’ Park on Saturday – Liverpool host Burnley on Super Sunday.
